Have you been waiting for Apple to release it’s “revolutionary” wireless charging pad? Well it’s official, AirPower has been cancelled and will never be released.
Apple has cancelled its AirPower wireless charger, saying that it was nigh on impossible for the company to achieve it’s usual “high standards” for the product, as announced via TechCrunch.
“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologise to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward,” said Apple SVP of hardware engineering Dan Riccio in a statement.
Apple first announced the AirPower charging system as part of its iPhone X event way back in September 2017. Apple revealed that wireless charging was going to be one of the new features of the iPhone X and the AirPower was going to be built to compliment that feature. Apple originally said the product would be released in 2018 but then nothing more was really heard about the product for a long time.
Apple claimed that the AirPower charging pad would be able to charge 3 devices at once – and was being aimed at those who owned an iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch. Apple touted the AirPower system as having special features such as a full charging area eliminating the need to find a sweet spot and a software overlay for the iPhone that would allows users to see how much power and charge time all 3 devices had or required.
Unfortunately Apple just couldn’t get it right. There have many reports citing issues such as overheating – due the charging pad having multiple charge coils – among others. But for a long time customers have been waiting and expecting the AirPower charging pad to be released. The charging pad had been mentioned in some Apple literature that comes with products such as the AirPods prior to the announcement back in 2017 and the Wall Street Journal even reported that the product had been green lit and gone into mass production. But alas, the product has now been officially cancelled and Apple owners will never get the AirPower Charging Pad.
